The Los Angeles College Faculty Guild or AFT Local 1521, is the exclusive bargaining agent representing over 4,000 full-time and adjunct faculty working in the nine community colleges within the Los Angeles Community College District. Our Guild has represented the district’s faculty since the beginning of collective bargaining in California’s community colleges in 1977, and is the largest local union of community college faculty in California.
The American Federation of Teachers Local 1521, Student Internship Program is actively recruiting student leaders from all nine campuses within the Los Angeles Community College District. Student Interns receive training in core civic/political organizing and advocacy skills while engaging students on their campus and communities across LA County and the state. Location: On your campus, some travel required.
Duration: 12 week program, 6 hours per week.
Key Responsibilities:
Mobilize students to attend monthly Board of Trustees meetings.
Engage and mobilize students on critical education, political, and community issues.
Register and pre-register students and community members to vote.
Engage in community service to contribute positively to our community through volunteer efforts.
Participate in project-related events as assigned.
Organize and lead local, state, or federal legislative visits.
Attend all relevant events, workshops, meetings, and trainings related to the Student Internship Program.
Attend Weekly meetings with campus coordinator and team.
Work on special projects as directed by the campus coordinator.
Organize and mobilize voters for election day (GOTV).
Canvass LACCD communities to discuss candidates and propositions.
Attend and enroll to the programs labor studies class.
Analyze and present on ballot propositions.
Lead and train students and volunteers in phone banking, canvassing, and voter registration drives.
Requirements:
Must be enrolled in any of the nine campuses within the Los Angeles Community College.
Must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 units.
Ability to work collaboratively with a team.
Self-motivated with the ability to work independently.
Strong passion for social justice.
Reliable transportation is required
All majors encouraged to apply
